Carpet Mistakes You Should Never Make

4 min read

Carpets are one of the most used items in the home. You literally can’t get up and go about your day without making use of it. As useful as they are, they are also incredibly tedious to replace.

This is why it is important to maintain appropriate upkeep and maintenance. As it would turn out, not a lot of people do it the right way. Their methods don’t usually produce the desired results, not to mention the number of setbacks they pose. This ultimately reduces the lifespan of the carpet.

When it comes to cleaning your carpet, you have to do it right. There’s no room for error, or you risk having to replace your carpets sooner and more often. To aid you on this, we’ll briefly look into a few mistakes you should never make when cleaning a carpet.

Common Carpet Cleaning Mistakes

  1. Allowing Stain on Carpet for A Long Time

The last thing you want is for a stain to get so deep into the carpet that it can barely be washed off, if at all.

Fortunately, London carpet cleaners are equipped to remove stains serious kinds of carpet stains, whether new or old. It doesn’t have to come to that, however. It shouldn’t matter what else you have going, the moment your carpet gets stained, it is important you prioritise the cleaning immediately. So, in case of any spill, that should be your first response.

  1. Cleaning with Coloured Cloths/Towels

It’s good that you want to jump right into action the moment there’s a stain on your carpet, but you shouldn’t just pick up any cloth or towel and use to clean. By doing this, you risk transferring stains from the material to your carpet.

On this note, you should always have plain or white clothes available, in case of a carpet spill.

  1. Refusing to Test Out Carpet Cleaners

Carpet cleaners have specific compatibilities, that means they don’t all work the same for every carpet. Using the wrong Cleaner for your carpet could cause it to lose its colour, or leave behind unpalatable residue.

Before making general use of any cleaner, it is recommended that you first test it on a small spot on your carpet. This will help reveal any possible adverse effect and know if it will work for your carpet.

  1. Rubbing and Scrubbing the Carpet

Do not rub when cleaning. This is probably what most people do.  They feel it is easier to just rub away, vigorously, and quickly take out all the stains — this is wrong. All you’re really doing is making the stains worse. When you rub on it, you make a wide and circular movement. By doing that, the stain begins to spread across the carpet, expanding to surrounding areas.

You should instead blot out the spill. This is when you press cloth or towel down against the stained area. The cloth sill absorbs as much of the stain as possible.

  1. Soaking the Carpet When Cleaning

If at all you must, try not to over shampoo or soak the carpet, or it will be much harder to clean. Excessive use of shampoo on your carpet can pose a problem because you would need to clean up the carpet until the water is clear.

A soaked carpet makes it easier for the spill to spread, which would make the whole process far more tedious, and even leave some undesirable results.

  1. Not Employing Professional Carpet Cleaners

Like it or not, at least once every year, you need to clean your carpet. You might have to clean it more than once if you usually get many guests over, have small children, or smoke.  And it needs to be done by a professional cleaning service.
